Can a Dog Have Milk if Not Pregnant

Jessica Smith Profile

Galactorrhoea is inappropriate lactation which can be associated with pseudopregnancy.  Mammary gland neoplasia (cancer) and mastitis (infection) can also result in discharge from the nipple.  Psuedopregnancy is where a non-pregnancy dog will show clinical signs such as nesting, weight gain, mammary gland enlargement, and lactation.  It usually occurs about 6-12 weeks following heat.  It is thought to result from hormonal abnormalities.  Mammary gland tumours may present as hardened or lumpy breast tissue, bruising, ulceration of the skin overlying the glands.  Mastitis usually occurs during lactation but can occur at other times.  It is characterised by pain, heat at redness of the mammary glands, discharge and illness in the female.

A dog may produce fluid from her mammary glands if she is having a false pregnancy. If this dog is not pregnant then she should be checked by a veterinarian. Regardless if she is pregnant or not, she should be checked by a vet to be certain she is not having a problem.

Is your dog having a pseudo pregnancy? As this can produce breast milk.  The best thing you can do is to take her to the vets and arrange a time to have her spayed.  Please let me know, thank you

Dogs start to produce milk usually 7-10 days before delivery of puppies. Milk is produced due to a hormone called prolactin. This hormone is produced by anterior pituitary gland. During last stages of pregnancy and nursing period, prolactin levels are high in dogs. This condition can start milk production. If dog is not pregnant but she starts to produce milk then this condition can be due to false pregnancy, tumors in the pituitary glands, and hypothyroidism. So, if this is a case of your dog then take her to vet for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Yes. It started with wolf packs. The lead wolf is the only one aloud to get pregnant but all the other female dogs produce milk at the same time. This is because if the lead dog doesn't have enough milk to feed all the pups one of the other females can feed it.
